Konsta Linkola’s Avanto (Icy Waters) portrays a collision between the human body and ice cold waterSep 12, 2017
The Avanto photography exhibition (from September 14 to January 7) will be opened at the Bang Bang Gallery on Aalto EE’s premises in the main building of the Aalto University School of Business.
The Avanto series captures the vulnerable moment when our natural instincts and fleshly body are challenged by freezing cold water. It is an exploration which exposes and captures the moment when the firm line is crossed between safe space and the dark and unknown world of water. The photographs highlight the initial seconds in which a body is immersed in freezing water. In Avanto, the viewer can also admire the beauty of light reflecting through thick ice.
The series reveals the most authentic and unguarded reactions. For some, the line between the water and air is physical, while for others it is mental. A violent reaction transitions into a soothing experience, in which serenity and endorphins overcome the initial shock.
“My greatest sources of inspiration and themes are derived from nature. I am an outdoor enthusiast and have always been interested in cultures associated with rural and outdoor life. I live through such experiences and want to communicate them to the viewer,” Linkola says.
Konsta Linkola (b. 1993) is a travel and nature photographer based in Tampere, Finland. Despite his young age, Linkola is drawing attention around the globe with his work and has already been awarded and published by National Geographic. His innovative use of social media and enchanting nature photographs have made him into one of Finland’s most avidly followed photographers on Instagram.
The Avanto exhibition is being organized together with the Finnish Art Agency, and will also exhibit outside Finland during 2018. The photographs are printed in collaboration with Canon.
Avanto is part of the official Suomi100 program.
The exhibition will be open by appointment from 14 September 2017 to 7 January 2018 (contact email@example.com).
There will be an open house on 19 October and 23 November, when everyone is welcome to visit the exhibition.
