Ranked in the world’s top 100, Aalto Executive MBA’s strength lies in its impact

Aalto University has improved its standing in all of the most important field-specific university rankings. In the recently announced Times Higher Education university rankings for business and economics, Aalto moved up to 54th place. “QS Top 50 under 50”, which lists the world’s 50 leading universities founded less than 50 years ago, ranks Aalto University in 9th place. Financial Times has once again ranked the Aalto Executive MBA program in the world’s top one hundred among thousands of peers. This year’s ranking was 92nd.

The strength of the Aalto EMBA program lies in its impact. The long-term goal of Aalto University Executive Education (Aalto EE), which is responsible for the program, is to create a better world through better leadership.

“These different rankings act as a thermometer in our field. They provide an important snapshot alongside the actual quality accreditations. The role of the Aalto Executive MBA program is to support the participants’ personal transformation and strengthen their impact in their respective organizations’ transformation,” says Dr. Pekka Mattila, Group Managing Director for Aalto EE and Professor of Practice in Aalto University School of Business.

Another important factor in the impact of a training program is the profile and background of the peer students. Aalto EE has a particularly rigorous admission process, and international comparison shows that the Aalto EMBA participants are already very experienced and in senior positions in their organizations when they start the program.

“Our program brings together key employees in leading companies, the most promising growth entrepreneurs, and the key personnel from public sector. It’s important for us to create a platform where the key decision-makers from various fields can meet and learn from each other as well,” says Hanna-Riikka Myllymäki, Business Area Director responsible for Aalto EE's MBA and EMBA programs.

During the EMBA program, Berner CEO Antti Korpiniemi reached a better understanding of the thinking in large global corporations. While finishing the program during the turn of the millennium, he was working as a Department Director in the company. He became CEO in 2013.

“Leadership can and needs to be learned. An EMBA is an investment that pays off. It has certainly helped me great deal,” Antti Korpiniemi says.

One of the latest success stories from the public sector is Sally Järvelä, who was Deputy Chief in Tampere University Hospital when studying for the Aalto EMBA. In June, she was appointed as Medical Director of the Kanta-Häme Hospital District.

“A doctor’s education doesn’t qualify you for management tasks, which creates a need for the best management training you can get. I was straight away able to utilize in practice the knowledge gained in Aalto EMBA,” says Sally Järvelä, a respected change leader.

The joint programs of Anglo-American and Chinese universities continue to dominate the top places in the ranking immediately below HEC Paris, which took the first spot. The joint program between Kellogg (USA) and Hong Kong UST Business School was second, with HEC Paris, London School of Economics and Stern School of Business (New York University) taking third.

The FT Ranking is based on information provided directly to the FT by program participants, and statistical data provided by universities. The survey respondents are alumni who graduated from their Executive MBA program three years ago.
