Andreas Slotte is Head of Sustainable Development at The Port of Helsinki Ltd. Slotte affirms that he acquired highly useful skills for his work from the Aalto MBA.
”I value the strong competence in strategy and finance that the degree gave me. The Port of Helsinki is investing significantly in sustainable development solutions and I use these skills daily,” says Slotte.
”In the Aalto MBA you are forced – in a positive way – to look at issues from nearly every possible business viewpoint for two years, and also question them. This develops you as a person and helps you grow,” he adds.
Slotte’s background is not typical for an MBA student: he is a Sea Captain by training and spent nearly a decade at sea before he started work at The Port of Helsinki.
”I had studied at both a technical university and a business school for a while before starting my career at sea. While I enjoyed my university studies, the career prospects that these degrees offered did not appeal to me at the time,” he reminisces.
”The Port of Helsinki lured me back to dry land. Finland’s largest cargo port Vuosaari was looking for a Traffic Manager. It was such an interesting position, I had to apply. At the same time, I decided to get the business degree that I had been contemplating for a long time,” he explains.
Slotte is proof positive that you can obtain an MBA alongside work even if your schedule is jam-packed.
”When I started my studies, I had a demanding situation going on at work, our youngest child was six months old, and I also had a construction project. A city block consisting of nine housing companies was being built in Helsinki’s Jätkäsaari, and I was in charge of the group construction project of our housing company”, Slotte lists.
The Aalto MBA is demanding, but it gives much more than it takes."
”My wife was a bit concerned, but I just felt energized by the studies. I found the time and it wasn’t even all that hard. The Aalto MBA is demanding, but it gives much more than it takes. For me the studies acted just like strenuous sport does: it made me forget everything else as I concentrated on learning,” he says.
Slotte describes the study experience as marvelous. The instructors and case learning receive special praise from him.
”I thoroughly enjoyed the studies. I never once had to think about any practical arrangements and the teaching was very high quality. The best instructors had simply outstanding pedagogic skills. I found case studies frustrating in a good way, because the bar was set so high. You had to work hard, but it definitely paid off,” he ponders.
The Applied Finance and Accounting modules and strategy studies were Slotte’s main areas of interest during the MBA degree.
”I‘ve conducted a great deal of financial calculations in my work, and I’ve red quite extensively on the subject. I wanted to formalize my competence. Above all, I wanted to prove my capability to myself,” he explains.
”I got exactly what I was looking for. The finance professors were extraordinary. I can now discuss investments with our CFO and provide valid and solid arguments for disagreeing. It’s a great feeling, being certain of your own proficiency,” he asserts.
In autumn 2018 Slotte started in a new position at The Port of Helsinki. Strategy skills he learned at Aalto MBA have proved valuable in his work as Head of Sustainable Development for the entire organization.
I benefit daily from the strategy skills I gained during the MBA."
”One of the best parts of my job is the fact that the most financially sound decisions are usually also the most sustainable ones. I benefit daily from the strategy skills I gained during the MBA. I am in charge of our strategic spearhead project aiming at making us a forerunner in sustainable development,” he remarks.
Slotte admits he was surprised to find all the other subjects highly interesting as well.
”The instructors sparked my genuine interest in topics that I thought would be less interesting for me. Although I don’t work with issues such as HR or marketing on a day-to-day basis, I learned a great deal and I enjoyed doing so,” he describes.
Slotte says his work has become more systematic due to the MBA and he also learned new self-awareness.
”Two years of study honed my ability to prioritize to perfection, and made me more systematic in everything I do,” he emphasizes.
”The MBA also made me a better father, because I know myself better and I am calmer”, he says with a laugh.
I wanted the best education available and a degree that employer’s value. Hence, I chose Aalto EE."
“I think I grew most as a person due to everything I learned during the study modules, but the Personal and Professional Development Process and Negotiating and Influencing module also certainly had an impact,” he continues.
Slotte thoroughly investigated different programs before opting for the Aalto MBA.
”I assessed all my options meticulously and even considered online degrees. I quickly found that the letter combination MBA can refer to very different levels of education. I wanted the best education available and a degree that employer’s value. Hence, I chose Aalto EE”, he says.
”It was a great choice. My expectations were very high, yet the Aalto MBA still managed to exceed them. There is a reason why Aalto EE has the highest Financial Times ranking of all Finnish executive education providers. I warmly recommend participating,” Slotte confirms.
