"The insights and skills I acquired during the program have been a great support for our digital service development.”

Sami Tjurin
Director of Digital Business, Uponor Finland

Uponor Plc is a leading global provider of systems and solutions for hygienic drinking water delivery, energy-efficient heating and cooling, and reliable infrastructure. Director of Digital Business at Uponor Finland Sami Tjurin recently participated in Aalto EE and Esade's Design Thinking for Business Innovation program.

”I was looking for direct benefits for our business – I wanted to obtain design thinking methods and tools which we could apply in developing digital services and business models that bring genuine value for our customers. That’s exactly what I got,” Tjurin summarizes the program’s benefits.

Tjurin describes Design Thinking for Business Innovation as a well-designed, thought-provoking program that provided an excellent study experience. For Tjurin, the greatest take away was the way that the various tools and methods were linked to tangible business benefits.

“All the professors were great – and the content was marvelous. I found the concrete examples of how design thinking can be implemented in business, and how innovation projects should be led, to be tremendously helpful,” he says.

“If I had to name a favorite amongst our instructors, it would have to be Luis Vives. His insights stemming from both academia and his extensive experience of working with multinational companies made him such an engaging and knowledgeable instructor,” Tjurin adds.

Tjurin describes interaction with other participants as one of the program’s highlights.

“We had participants from around the world from very diverse backgrounds, and this enriched all of our interaction. Sharing best practices and ideas was very rewarding. We learned a great deal from each other, both in one-on-one discussions and in larger groups,” Tjurin says.

Tjurin says Uponor has been utilizing lessons he learned during the Design Thinking for Business Innovation program quite extensively.

“Embracing the opportunities of digitalization is a strategic choice for Uponor. The insights and skills I acquired during the program have been a great support for our digital service development,” he affirms.

While design thinking has been a part of Uponor’s service development for quite some time, it has now been brought to the forefront of all service development initiatives.

”As the market leader in our field we strive to provide our customers premium service that differentiates us from competitors. We made design thinking the spearhead of our service development for a very simple reason: it helps us create services that our customers want, and create more value for our customers,” Tjurin underlines.

”Bringing our customers closer to development work has already had a clear impact: when we launch something new, customer satisfaction is at a better level at an earlier stage,” he notes.

I recommend participating to anyone directly working with or in charge of developing services, business models or sales.''

Tjurin says he is pleased to endorse the Design Thinking for Business Innovation program to others. He asserts that the program is well suited for a broad range of professionals.

“I recommend participating to anyone directly working with or in charge of developing services, business models or sales. I especially recommend participating to professionals working in traditional industry: this program is very likely to give valuable new perspective,” he remarks.

”Your own project assignment forms a large portion of the program, so I recommend that you carefully select a challenge that enables you to reap the most benefits – and turn to the instructors for advice on how to do this,” he adds.
