Advances in technology and the proliferation of connected devices allow capturing and processing of prolific amounts of data about internal operations and the external world. This creates tremendous new business potential, even in traditional sectors. But what should leaders do to discover and unlock this potential? The Diploma in Data and Analytics program focuses on what leaders need to know to lead the creation of significant growth and new business. It centers on the unfolding paradigm of the data imperative and covers the core technologies and management principles needed to strive and grow business.

The Diploma in Data and Analytics program is aimed at company leaders who want to understand how data and analytics can help them lead the identification and growth of new business opportunities. It goes beyond the traditional approach of increasing the skills that an individual data analyst needs and incremental improvement of business. Instead, the program provides an advanced executive level understanding of the unfolding paradigm and technologies and methods related to data and analytics. Building on this understanding, participants learn through business frameworks, case examples, project work, and other tools how to discover, grow, and lead new kinds of business, and how to transform the old.

The program includes both the key technological and technical aspects and the key business aspects that a leader needs to know when developing and building a data and analytics intensive business.

As part of the program, participants undertake a project where they put to work what they have learned and create a plan to grow a new business or transform an existing one. They can freely select the topic, guided individually by the program faculty.

Contents and Schedule

The Diploma in Data and Analytics program centers on the unfolding paradigm of the data imperative and covers the core technologies and management principles needed to strive and grow within it. It covers the essentials of data and analysis, followed by an advanced data and analysis section tailored for executives.

 

Participants will learn to understand key technologies, how these technologies are interconnected, and the potential implications of developments on these technologies. Building on this understanding, participants learn through business frameworks, case examples, and other tools, how to discover, grow, and lead new kinds of business, and how to transform the old.

The program takes an executive perspective, highlighting the aspects that are most important from a strategic and company decision-making perspective. The program comprises lectures, case examples, group work, discussion, and a project.

Instructors

Henri Schildt

Henri Schildt is a tenured professor with a joint appointment at the Aalto University School of Business (Management & Organizations) and the School of Science’s Department of Industrial Engineering and Management.

His research interests span technology strategy, organizational change, and strategy process (with specific interest in reasoning under uncertainty and the use of data analytics). He is currently heading two research programmes on data-driven management and the management of digitalization in Finnish manufacturing companies. Henri Schildt completed his PhD at Helsinki University of Technology in 2007.

Kimmo Karhu

Kimmo Karhu is an Assistant Professor, at Aalto University Department of Industrial Engineering and Management.

Karhu is an expert on platform business models and a seasoned teacher on digital strategy. By combining hands-on industry experience with academic thinking, he seeks to explain how AI, machine learning, and other technologies can be leveraged for scaling platform business. Karhu's recent doctoral thesis analyses open platform strategizing and digital tactics in mobile ecosystems.

Marko Turpeinen

Adjunct Professor at Aalto University, CEO of 1001 Lakes

Dr. Marko Turpeinen is an Adjunct Professor at Aalto University. He is also founder and CEO of a recently established data sharing company called 1001 Lakes.

He was previously the Finnish Node Director of EIT Digital, a Knowledge an Innovation Community of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology and Professor in Media Technology at The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm. He has extensive industrial experience from the media industry, as between 1996 and 2005 he worked in various executive positions at Alma Media Corporation, a Finnish media company. His current academic research addresses issues in customized media content, human-centric approach to personal data, and the role of AI and algorithmic power in networked society. He has a Doctor of Technology Degree in Computer Science from Helsinki University of Technology (now Aalto University) and a Master of Science Degree in Media Arts and Sciences from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Ville Eloranta

Dr. Ville Eloranta is currently working as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Aalto University School of Business.

Dr. VEloranta is an expert in business model innovation (especially platform business models), distributed ledger technologies (especially open blockchain implementations), and design management (connecting design paradigms to management practice).

Ville Eloranta is teaching future transdisciplinary professionals in International Design Business Management programs, and is also involved in the development of Network university Fitech (a transformative education endeavor of 7 biggest Finnish universities, Technology Industries of Finland, and TEK). He is researching business models in decentralized business ecosystems, and has a solid track record of publications in top-level management journals.

Before joining academia, Dr, Eloranta worked nearly 20 years as a service designer and programmer, and design agency entrepreneur (founder of a 30-person company in three countries), solving digitalization challenges especially for big B2B customers.

Dr. Ville Eloranta holds a PhD in Industrial Engineering and Management from Aalto University School of Science.
