Introduction to Digital Transformation Technologies online course introduces four hyped technologies driving digital transformation: artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, blockchain, and software robotics.

Covered topics in the online course include e.g. neural networks, computer vision, smart contracts, and different AR and VR applications. After the course, you will know what these technologies are, where they came from, and what is expected in the future.

The Introduction to Digital Transformation Technologies course contains five online modules. The online modules consist of efficient video lectures covering the technologies from different perspectives, additional study materials, and company interviews.

Contents and Schedule

The five online modules of the course introduce artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, software robotics, and blockchain. The modules consist of video lectures, additional materials, and company interviews.

The estimated study time of the course is 12 hours. The course allows flexible study patterns; you can decide on your schedule and the speed of your progress. The recommended study schedule is 2-3 hours per week for 3-4 weeks.

Instructors

Riitta Bekkhus

Riitta Bekkhus holds a Ph.D. in Information Systems Science from Aalto University, School of Business. 

She has over 20 years of working experience with large Nordic IT companies. In her thesis, Bekkhus studied RPA implementations and created a step-by-step digital business transformation program for traditional companies to follow. Currently, she works as a Digi-Transformation Architect and Advisor at Nordomus. Riitta Bekkhus has taught the first Finnish “chatbot whisperers” working with AI and has been active in the start-up scene.

Arto Klami

Arto Klami is an assistant professor in Computer Science at the University of Helsinki. He belongs to the Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence (FCAI), where he coordinates activities developing easier tools for building uncertainty-aware artificial intelligence.

Klami has been researching AI for more than 15 years, particularly probabilistic machine learning. His research group, Multi-source Probabilistic Inference, works on new machine learning models and algorithms, as well as a diverse range of applications from understanding human behavior to ultrasonic cleaning and spectral imaging.

Janne M. Korhonen

Janne M. Korhonen (MSc (Tech), PhD) is a researcher and an author who researches the qualities, possibilities, and limitations of different technologies in modern society.

Currently, he is working at Aalto University on the Recon project, which studies applications of blockchain technology. Before his research career, he was the founding partner in the design and product development services at Seos Design.

Mikko Kurimo

Mikko Kurimo is an associate professor at Aalto University, where he leads the automatic speech recognition group.

Kurimo has more than 20 years of experience in speech and language. He is specialized in modeling speech and language using machine learning and speech recognition to transform speech to text, assist in foreign language learning, and produce descriptions of audiovisual data. Internationally, his group is best known for their work on modeling morphologically rich languages for speech recognition.

Mikko Kytö

Mikko Kytö has researched augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) with a multidisciplinary approach for over 10 years.

He received his M.Sc. from Helsinki University of Technology in 2009 and D.Sc. from Aalto University in 2014. From his research in Finland and international collaboration, he has gained a comprehensive overall image of the field of AR and VR. Especially he has researched interaction and visualization techniques for AR and VR, as well as application contexts for AR and VR, such as using AR in social interaction. Kytö has published scientific articles in the best venues in the field, for example, at ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems.

Jaakko Lehtinen

Jaakko Lehtinen is an MSc (Tech) from Aalto University, School of Science.

He is an experienced business consultant and trainer in Intelligent Automation (IA), Robotic Process Automation (RPA), and Knowledge Work Automation. Lehtinen is currently working at Capgemini as Head of the Nordic Intelligent Automation Center of Excellence. He has worked with RPA since 2014 and is a true technology enthusiast.

Esko Penttinen

Esko Penttinen is Associate Professor (tenured) in Information Systems at Aalto University School of Business. Penttinen holds a D.Sc. in Information Systems Science and a M.Sc. in Economics from Helsinki School of Economics.

Penttinen's research helps organizations understand the intricacies related to the implementation of various forms of artificial intelligence, harnessing its benefits and avoiding the pitfalls. Penttinen is an avid student of the interplay between humans and machines, curious to generate insights on how to coordinate work tasks efficiently between the two. Penttinen's research has also addressed the more traditional information systems topics such as organizational governance issues related to outsourcing and virtual work. Penttinen's main practical expertise lies in the assimilation and economic implications of inter-organizational information systems, focusing on application areas such as electronic financial systems, government reporting, and electronic invoicing. Penttinen's research has appeared in leading IS outlets such as MIS Quarterly, Journal of the Association for Information Systems, Information Systems Journal, European Journal of Information Systems, Journal of Information Technology, International Journal of Electronic Commerce, MIS Quarterly Executive, and Electronic Markets.

Besides teaching and research activities, Penttinen leads the Real-Time Economy Competence Center and he is the co-founder and chairman of XBRL Finland (www.xbrl.fi). Both these initiatives aim to design and develop systems and infrastructures to facilitate the move to electronic financial administration processes. In 2019-2023, Penttinen acted as the Finnish board representative in the IRIS association, which is the Scandinavian information systems community responsible for organizing the yearly IRIS/SCIS conference and overseeing the Scandinavian Journal of Information Systems.

Mats Sjöberg

Mats Sjöberg is a Machine learning specialist at CSC - IT Center for Science, where he works with the machine learning environments on Finland's fastest supercomputers.

He holds a PhD in computer science from Aalto University. His scientific interests are machine learning and computer vision, particularly deep learning methods for understanding and describing image and video content.

Tuukka Takala

Tuukka Takala is a postdoctoral researcher at Waseda University. He graduated from Aalto University, where he taught a VR course for five years.

Takala has worked full-time with augmented and virtual reality since 2007, focusing on VR software development and full-body avatars.

Liisa Välikangas

Liisa Välikangas is a Professor in Innovation Management at Aalto University School of Business and Hanken School of Economics.

Professor Välikangas’ areas of expertise include strategic leadership, innovation, and management, change and innovation capability, as well as the transformation of companies. Professor Välikangas has over 15 years of experience working with leading international companies.

Previously, Liisa Välikangas has worked for e.g. Stanford University, London Business School, Keio University in Japan, and IMD in Switzerland and cooperated actively with leading global companies. Currently, Dr. Välikangas’ research interests are in the field of blockchain, strategic resilience, and leadership innovation. 

The Academy of Management awarded her the Best Action Research Paper prize in 2009 in Organizational Change and Development division. She regularly talks to executive audiences about innovation management, organizational resilience, and strategy development. She is the author of The Resilient Organization, How Adaptive Cultures Thrive Even When Strategy Fails, published in 2010.

Liisa holds a PhD in Business Administration from the University of Tampere.
